The Last Of Fall Colors

Last weekend I was lucky enough to go home and visit my family for a long weekend. The timing could not have been better as my dad was turning 50 that Sunday! I felt so thankful that I was able to be there to celebrate with him and to help make his day special.

One of the things that he wanted to do that day was go outside and take some family pictures. The weather was beautiful and the Ann Arbor fall colors were in their prime. My boyfriend drove down earlier in the day to celebrate the birthday with us, so he was able to join in on all the photography fun.
We seriously could not have asked for a prettier day to be outside! Michigan weather can be very bi-polar but that weekend it was beautiful. Today's actually another gorgeous day, so I'm trying to soak up as much of the colors and sunshine before winter takes them away.

Fall is hands down my favorite season, I think partially because of the symbolism it has (new goals, fresh starts) and largely because of it's beautiful, rich colors and the warmth and coziness that comes with the lower temperatures.

What's your favorite season? Do you have any fall traditions that you partake in? I'd love to hear about them!

LBB: Little Black Bralette

LBB

After years of trying to buy the best push-up bra at Victoria's Secret (I swear boobs were the thing in High School..) to give the illusion that I have somewhat of a chest, I've finally embraced my smaller set of twins and learned to love them. Ever since I found my first bralette 2 years ago I've been smitten. As an athlete I'm used to wearing sports bras but obviously look for something a little nicer when I'm dressing in non-athletic clothing or just hanging out at home. Insert: the bralette. These babies are as comfortable as they are cute and are an absolute staple in my wardrobe. For ladies that only need little support, these are your god-sent gifts.

Do you love the bralette trend as much as I do? Do you also seem to have an unhealthy amount of them? Tell me your favorites! I personally love my one from Aerie and a couple I picked up at Urban over the summer.

Let's Talk About Drinks

Let's talk about drinks. No, not the alcoholic kind, but the type that seem to be booming through health stores and giving soda a run for it's money. These days you can't walk into a grocery store (especially organic/health stores) without being bombarded with stands and cases full of colorful bottles claiming to bring you health and balance. I'll be completely honest --I love to buy them! Drinks are such a quick way to get some nutrients into your system and when you're on the go it's much easier to gulp down a smoothie or freshly concocted juice as opposed to eating an actual salad.

Recently I've been trying these aloe vera drinks as I heard they were healing and extremely hydrating (always a good thing in the winter months!). To my surprise, they actually taste great! I was expecting another "health drink" that tasted a bit like drinking blended grass (sorry, wheat-grass lovers..). I was pleased to find that the drinks are quite sweet and taste refreshen when straight from the fridge. I'm no nutritionist, so I can't actually attest to if they are really much better for you than water. That said, I can tell you that I enjoy drinking them and feel extra nourished and almost "cleansed" (is that a feeling one can have post-drink?) after I have one.

Another drink that seems to be "hot" right now is kombucha. I personally love the taste and lots of people praise the drink for the probiotic benefits. Again, I'm not completely sure about it's healing abilities for sickness or it's chance of boosting your immune system, but at this time of the year I'm almost willing to try anything!

What are your thoughts? Do you have any drinks or health foods you swear by? I know coconut water is a huge favorite for many, but I just can't get into that one! I will, however, mix up my nightly Golden Milk between coconut milk and Silk. Let me know what your favorites are! I'm always looking to try new things :)

Wednesday Words

I recently saw this quote on Pinterest and it really struck a cord with me. As I approach my senior year of college, it seems like grad school and post-grad jobs are constantly on my mind. It's been a constant battle of searching for the perfect fit for my future and trying to decide what it is that I want to do for a living. "Do I still want to be a healthcare provider? Maybe public health would be a better fit for my interests..What if I don't want to do health at all...should I change it up and go for an MBA? "...My poor boyfriend has heard it all (thank you so much for calming me down almost everyday!).

Seeing this quote reminded me that it's okay not to know exactly what's in store for you next. Not every detail in life can be planned out..and I guess that's what makes it both terrifying and beautiful. For at least these next few days, I'm going to try to keep this quote in mind and focus on worrying less and living more.

Have you been spending too much time worrying? How do you work to stay present and trust in the process?

5 Ways to De-stress During Exam Weeks

I'm quite confident that all student readers can agree that exam weeks (midterms, finals, those random awful weeks when every professor decides to test you..) can wreak havoc on your system and cause loads of unnecessary stress. While school and your education are definitely extremely impotent, so is your health and well-being. Sometimes you can get all wrapped up in the stresses of schoolwork and forget to give yourself some leeway and grace -- after all, you are only human! I can speak for myself when I say that it's incredibly easy to be your hardest critic. As a total "Type-A" perfectionistic student, I speak from a place of experience when I say I know what it's like to get frustrated over an A- or upset when you get back an exam and scored a B+ (even if the class average was close to failing).

It's times like these that it's important to remember to breathe and take a step back. Here are 5 things that I find helpful to do during exam-packed weeks to relieve some stress and keep myself (and those around me!) sane.

1. Study Somewhere New
Studying in the same place can be mentally draining. While libraries are great places to knock out your work, they tend to not be the most aesthetically-pleasing environments. On days that I spend hours on end studying for a multitude of classes, I find it helpful to change up my environment fairly frequently. For me this means spending a few hours at the school library, then maybe going somewhere different or home for lunch. For my next chunk of studying perhaps I go to a local coffee shop or a different building on campus. Whatever areas work best for you and provide you with your optimal study environment, go there. Just make sure to take breaks and change things up if you feel yourself hitting a rut!
2. Get Movin'!
Exercise is so key for weeks when schoolwork is piling up. It's easy to put your fitness on the back burner -- it's often one of the first things people drop when they feel too busy! -- but it's so vital for your well-being. Not only is it good for your body, but it's great for your mind. As a Big Ten athlete I'm working out daily and often I take the correlation between that exercise and my academic performance for granted. According to my physiology professor, even just 20 minutes of exercise the day of an exam has been found to be beneficial for test-performance. It doesn't have to be an intense 7 mile run to help stimulate blood flow and brain action. If the best way for you to fit in exercise is to walk or bike to class instead of catching the bus, do that! It may seem like a small change but it can make a big impact on your mood. Not into cardio? I swear by yoga. It's exercise + meditation all in one.
3. Do One Thing A Day For Yourself
Taking time for yourself each day is such a mood booster. To feel the effects this doesn't have to be a huge time consuming thing. I find it can be as small as using a new shampoo in the shower or taking the time to light a candle and make a warm mug of tea to sip on while you review your notes. As I mentioned in the previous bullet point, meditation can have great benefits! Doing a quick stretching routine at home or carving out an hour or two to go to a yoga class can bring you clarity and make it so the time that you are studying is even more efficient. Taking the time to do something that makes you feel happy or pampered can make a huge difference in how your perceive your day. It's important to remember to take care of yourself, even when it feels like you have no time or energy.
4. Don't Neglect Your Loved Ones
This one is huge. I know when I get wrapped up in my studies it's so easy to put social events on the back burner. While yes, it's probably not the best idea to go out and party late or attend an all-day event the day before a big test, it's incredibly important to keep up with your social ties! Whether this means picking up your phone and calling a relative or spending a study-sesh with a friend or significant other, it's helpful to keep in contact with other people! Being able to take little breaks to think about and interact with all of the great people in your life can serve as a good reminder that there are people out there who love you unconditionally and not for your exam grades.
5. Remember: Perspective
As I was getting to at the end of #4, perspective is everything. College is such an exciting time for your future and especially for pre-professional students, your academic performance is very important! At the same time, it's helpful to remember that your grades do not define you. Your GPA does not reflect how you make yourself and others around you feel. Your resume will not reflect the late nights that you spent awake to talk with a friend who was going through a rough patch. In 30 years, you (probably) won't remember if you got an 89% or a 92% on your psychology exam. Education is invaluable but there are other important things in life and it's important to remember that when school feels like your entire world. Life is a balancing act, and at the end of the day, if you do your best and work hard, chances are it will pay off and everything will fall into place.

The Only Pumpkin Muffin Recipe You'll Ever Need

You guys. This is it right here. The best pumpkin muffin recipe there is, trust me. Is that a bold statement? Maybe..but as a self-proclaimed pumpkin connoisseur I think I'm fairly qualified to make such bold claims. These pumpkin muffins have the perfect balance of sweet, spicy, and of course, chocolatey. They stay moist (ugh, anyone else hate that word?) and can be devoured as the perfect breakfast, snack or dessert. They're really just the ultimate muffin.

This recipe is one that my mom has used for as long as I can remember and although I know it's from one of our many trusty cookbooks, I'm not sure which one. My family almost always copies favorite recipes down onto notecards.  The recipe is pretty close to the original with just a few small tweaks to it (like adding more chocolate....duh). I must say it's pretty close to perfection.

Without further ado, here's the recipe! Please let me know if you go ahead and try it out -- I promise you it won't disappoint!

Ingredients
(makes about 12)
  • 1 & 2/3 cup all-purpose flour (I like to use white whole wheat but my mom always makes it with just white flour..it's really your preference!)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon pumpkin spice
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup pumpkin (about half of a 1 lb can)
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
  • 1 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips
  1. Heat the oven to 350 F.  Grease or line the muffin tins.
  2. Thoroughly mix flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, pumpkin spice and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Break eggs in a separate bowl. Add pumpkin and butter and whisk until well blended. Stir in the chocolate chips.
  4. Pour over dry ingredients and fold in with a rubber spatula until the dry ingredients are just moisturized.
  5. Scoop the batter evenly into the muffin cups. Bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until the center is puffy and springy to touch.
  6. Let cool on a rack before enjoying with a glass of cold milk :)

Do you have a favorite pumpkin recipe? Any family favorites that remind you of Fall? I'd love to hear them and try them out!

Fall Uniform

Fall Uniform

Madewell red top / J Crew brown sweater / Madewell ripped jeans / Madewell lace bra / Sam edelman booties / H M white loop scarf / J.Crew CHUP stripe socks

Fall is my absolute favorite season for clothing. It's definitely when my closet becomes it's fullest and my wallet becomes it's emptiest. I swear I have a magnet inside of me that's solely attracted to all things plaid, knit, and warm. As a pretty die-hard neutral lover, the muted tones of fall clothing are my absolute favorite colors. On any given day you could pretty much bet on finding me in some variation of the above outfit.

Currently I'm craving some new flannels (I had some old ones from the men's section in Target and I also love just borrowing my boyfriend's) and some new socks. Socks just seem to always disappear on me and with the frigid Michigan winters I can never have a shortage of nice wool ones!

Are you looking to add anything to your wardrobe this Fall? Do you have any favorite Fall outfits or pieces? Let me know!

October.

Well, October is officially here and in full swing in the Midwest. Today seems to be the ultimate chilly fall day in Michigan.  With a high of 48 degrees and a low of 39, it's starting to feel like once again our state is skipping over the entire transition season and going straight into winter. Luckily for me, I happen to love the colder weather.  The lower temperatures and dreary overcasts remind me of warm drinks, thick layers, and snugging up with loved ones.

Today I'm trying to take full advantage of those cozy autumn vibes. So far, so good. This morning began with freshly baked apple-oat muffins and some warm coffee on the back porch (let me know if you're interested in a recipe -- once you have them you'll never go back to another variety!). I let my boyfriend sleep in a bit more before we headed to the farmers market. One thing that will never fail to make me happy is spending even a half hour meandering market's on the weekend. Seeing all of the local vendors, fresh produce and products made and sold with care just warms my heart.

Today I decided to go ahead and buy two mini pumpkins to use for decoration in my college house (for 50 cents how could I pass them up?!). Lars and I also picked out some fresh honey as the local honeys are great for warding off illness and boosting immune systems in the colder months.  Of course the weather was awfully chilly, so warm drinks in hand were a must! Lars is a total black coffee drinker (always in their largest cup or mug) whereas I know no loyalties to my drinks. Tea, black coffee, lattes, cider...I like them all! With today being dreary and drizzly outside I opted for an earl grey latte. Perhaps it's just me, but earl grey lattes just scream "rainy day drink" to me. We had a wonderful time walking around the different booths, holding hands to stay warm (boys are silly and forget things like gloves and jackets), and admiring all of the beautiful changing leaves.

Now I'm back at my home with the goal of knocking out some major studying for my Monday midterm. It's hard to want to focus on school on a lovely Fall day like today but I know I'll feel better if I get some done!

What are you doing today? Are you planning on staying in and snuggling up or braving the cold in layers? I highly recommend checking out local farmers markets if there are any near you. It always makes for the best date and great conversation!

Rainy Days

http://www.pinterest.com/magghal/

This morning I woke up to the pitter patter of a dreary, rainy fall day. I don't know about you, but these are the kinds of days where all I want to do is curl up with a big mug of tea or coffee and snuggle under the covers (preferably in a cozy knit with some candles lit...I'm basic, I know). Unfortunately, midterms wait for no college student. In an attempt to be as close to my ideal rainy day as possible, I dragged by butt to a local coffee shop and am looking to study my for Monday's Cognitive Psychology exam over here. It may not be my bed, but at least I have the warm drink and the oversized sweater!

How do you like to spend your rainy days? Are you a die-hard sunshine lover or do you also enjoy the quietness of grey days?
